Module 4(BNUUnit10 Money

 Lesson 1 A Material World

Analysis of the text:

It is a news report about an ex-millionaire who donated all his money and enjoys a simple life at present. This text aims at helping the young students establish their values with the teacher’s guidance by arguing about the relationship between money and happiness.

Aims and demands:

1. Vocabulary: to practice understanding difficult words in a reading text using syntactic and semantic clues.

              to revise the use of quantity words and expressions.

2. Reading:  to predict the content of a text using information form the title and                 accompanying pictures.

           to train the students‘ reading ability by fast reading and careful reading.

Important points and difficulties

1. Ability:     to help the students understand the reading materials and improve their reading ability.

2. Emotion:    to help the students to establish their values correctly.

Approaches:

1. Discussing and arguing to help the students understand what they have learnt better.

2. Fast reading and careful reading.

3. Pair work of individual work.

Aids :

Microsoft PowerPoint, projector, blackboard

Teaching procedures:

Step1.  Warm up

Mention the topic of this unit to the class and get the students to argue about the good things and bad things brought by money.

1. Would you like to be a millionaire? Why or why not?

2. What can money buy?

3. What can't money buy?

Step2.  Pre-reading

Read the title and look at the two photos. Get the students to make predictions with the help of the introduction of the writing.

1. Who are the two men?

2. What happened to the old gentleman?

Step3.  Reading

Task 1.  Fast reading

Read the text quickly and try to guess the meaning of the new words and phrases.

Do exercise 2 and decide whether the statements are true or false.

Get some students to tell the class their answers.

Task 2.  Careful reading

Get the students to read the passage once again with the questions below and then speak out their possible answers.

1.  What was Charles' life like in the past?

2.  Why didn't Charles want to be a rich man?

3.  How did he deal with his money?

4.  How about his life now?

5.  How does he feel now? Good or bad?

Step4.  Vocabulary

Tell the students to do exercise 3 and check the answers with the class.

The teacher should help the students identify the exact meaning of the phrases “to drop out” and “to give up” in the context of the passage.

Step5.  Grammar

Read and try to find quantity words and expressions in the text.

Collet the quantity words and expressions by asking some students to report their findings.

Then do exercises 5, 6 and 7.

Before dealing with any of them, the teacher should help the students revise the use of quantity words and expressions by asking and answering and list the important points on the blackboard.

More exercises on the grammar point.

_____ mistake can ruin the whole mission, so we can never be too careful.

Step6.  Assignment

Read the passage and try to understand it fully.
