Unit3 I’m more outgoing than my sister

Analysis of the students: Students of Grade 8, they have grasped basic skills, such as skimming and scanning. They are fond of finishing different activities and reading passages. But some are afraid of making mistakes.

Analysis of the teaching materials: Today students will learn Section B(—2e), the second period of Section B in Unit3. They will learn three passages about jeff. Huang Lei and Mary Smith, their ideas about friends.

Teaching aims

Knowledge aims:

Key vocabularies and phrases: mirror, as long as, necessary, be different from, bring out, saying, reach, hand, touch, heart, break, arm, laugh, share, get good grades etc

Key sentences:

Friends are like books you don’t need a lot of them as long as they’re good.

My best friends helps to bring out the best in me.

A true friend reaches for your hand and touches your heart.

Ability aims:

Cultivate and train students’ reading and speaking skills.

Moral aims: To guide students to find good friends.

Teaching key points:

To learn and master the key words and sentences.

To learn how to talk about our friends.

To practice and master the reading strategies.

Teaching difficult points: To understand sayings and use them to find good friends.

Teaching &Learning Methods: Tasks of different levels; Question guiding; Communicative methods.

Teaching aids: multimedia, pictures, chart

Teaching procedures

Step1: Greetings and Lead-in

Listen to a poem, lead into the topic of this class-friends. (purpose: Make students interested in the topic.)

Step2: Pre-reading(purpose: Review the adjectives and comparative forms)

1) Ask students to brainstorm adjectives they’ve learnt to describe their own friends.

2) Teach the words in the reading part.

Step3: While-reading (purpose: To improve the reading skills and understand the passages)

1. Listening (individual work)

Match the friends of Jeff Green, Huang Lei, Mary Smith.

2. Scanning (individual work)

Read the passages quickly and match the persons with their right ideas about friends.

3. Detailed reading (pair work)

Read the passage carefully and find out the differentces and similarities between friends in each paragraph, fill in the chart.

Step4: Post-reading (group work) (purpose: To improve students’ speaking and writing skills)

1) Find out the sayings from the passages and explain them.

2) Discussion and Writing ( purpose: To improve students’ speaking and writing skills)

Which saying about friends is your favorite?

Which friend do you think about when you read this saying? Why?

Instructions:Choose one of the sentences, discuss them in groups. Four students a group, a leader, a recorder, a speaker… .

Step5: Summary.

We’ve learnt some words and phrases. Such as popular, serious, outgoing, funny, mirror…; Sentence pattern: 主语+be+adj. 比较级+than+对比成分;Sayings and writing: how to make friends

Step6: Homework

Compare(比较) yourself with your friends, then write a passage about your similarities and differences. (about 80 words)

Step7: Blackboard Design
