Lesson4 Journey to the Antarctic

1st period (第一课时)

The Race to the Pole

教学对象:

高一(1)班  学生人数 52 

教材分析:

本课时是关于极地探险的话题,在学习过程中要能突出“勇气”二字,从而让学生去体会学习故事主人翁的精神,并让学生课后去讨论关于勇气的话题,明确每一个人必须要具备相当的勇气才能克服困难,才能够有成功的可能。如果没有勇气,我们做任何事情都会寸步难行,教育学生要向文中的Captain Scott和他的团队学习。本课的学习重点还包括 1.根据上下文来预测相关难的词汇;2根据标题和课文的图片来预测文章的内容等阅读技巧。

教学方法:

任务教学法 学生中心教学法 多媒体辅助教学法

教学目标:

本课学习结束后,学生能够

1 掌握课文中相关的重点句子和短语

2 试着根据上下文来预测词义

3 试着根据相关线索来预测文章内容

4 体会文章的主旨“非凡勇气”

教学重难点:

文章的精神价值  培养阅读技巧

教学过程:

Pre-reading

Task 1 writes two words “courage” and “brave”  on the Bb and say

today’s topic is about extraordinary courage of Captain Scott’s team.

Show the names:   Amundsen and his men ;

        Captain Scott Captain Oates ; Edgar Evans and another two brave men .

设计说明:courage brave引出本课话题

Task 2  Based on the titles and pictures of this lesson , please guess

1. Which pole did they race to?

2. Who reached the pole first?

设计说明: 让学生从标题和图片中去寻找线索,来预测内容并回答

问题。

While-reading

Task 3  Fast reading

1 .T asks Ss to find out the answers according to the questions.

2. Then check the answers.

Answers: 1)t ; 2)f ; 3)t ; 4)f ; 5)t ; 6)t

Task 4 Reading Strategies.

1 Being familiar with the Reading Strategies

2 Using the Strategies to do Ex4 on p29.

Ask Ss :

     1.  To find out the words from the text : sledge  break down  run out of  ambition hopeless cheerful distant carry on within shocked

    2.  To decide what kind of words they are.

     3.  Then to mach the words with their definitions

Task 5 Useful or good language points

T asks Ss to find out

1. Useful words and expressions: 

e.g. in preparation for;   prepare for ; make rapid progress   be exhausted ;  run out of ;  carry on ;  break down

 

2 Good sentences:

1)Then came the total darkness of the polar next year.

2) He had teams of dogs pulling the sledges and all his men were on skis.

3) We are very cheerful, but what each man feels in his heart I can only guess.

4) Later, these rocks proved that at one time in the distant past the Antarctic was covered by plants.

5) The next to go was Captain Oates, who was having great difficulty walking.

6)…and then the horses began to have serious difficulties with the snow and the cold.

7) He had failed to win the race to the pole.

After finding, please exchange with each other and share them together.

Task 6 Discussion

Ask Ss to discuss the questions in Ex5

1. Why did Amundsen succeed and Scott fail?

2. What did Scott’s team achieve?

3. Why did Scott and his men become heroes?

4. How did you feel after you read the story?

设计说明:既考察学生提取信息的能力,也考察学生归纳总结信息的能力。同时本文是一个很好的能让人有启发而且很受感动的故事,通过讨论,让学生深刻理解勇气对我们的重要性。

Blackboard design

In order to make the blackboard design clearly and neatly, I will divide the blackboard into three parts. On the left, I’ll write teaching aims; in the middle of the blackboard, there should be important and difficult language points, and on the right, I will write the summary of this whole class.

Read this text again and again.

Recite and remember good phrases and sentences in this passage.

教学反思:

本节课,学生兴趣盎然,因为材料本身就是一个传奇故事,故事不但曲折感人,而且催人奋进,让他们明白了一个人必须要具备一定的精神和勇气,才能有所作为。我很好的利用了这节课的深刻思想内涵从而让学生进行讨论关于勇气的话题,学生踊跃发言,课堂气氛轻松,秩序井然,因此本节课收到比较好的教学效果,学生接收课本语言知识速度也比以往要快。通过本节课的教学,我明白了做为教师,要尽量制造宽松的课堂氛围,让学生在愉快中学习语言知识并且在精神上也能得到熏陶。
