Material analysis

In this unit, students learn to talk   about the history of inventions using the passive voice. And they will know   much about the history of several inventions. Also they will be asked to   think of their inventions.

Objectives

1.       To understand   and describe how food can taste.

2.       To learn   the history of potato chips by listening carefully.

3.       To   practice talking about the invention of potato chips.

4.       Lead   students to know the importance of inventions in daily life.

Key structure

1. The customer was happy in the end.

2. Do you know how potato chips were   invented?

3. Did you know potato chips were   invented by mistake?

  Wow, I didn’t know that. Who invented them?

Key points

1.       Master   the new words and target language.

2.       Master   the use of passive voice.

3.       Develop   students’ listening and speaking skills.

Difficulties

1.Train students’ listening and speaking   skills by talking about the history of food .

2.How to understand and talking about the   invention of potato chips.

Lead-in

Warm-up and Revision.

Ask Ss to translate some key phrases into Chinese.

Ask students to practice talking as the following   conversations:

A:What do you think is the most helpful   invention ?

B:I think the most helpful invention is…

Step 1

Presentation (Discussion)

Show Ss some pictures about the delicious food and have   students tell the names of the food.

Get students to read them correctly and ask students   how the food taste.

Read and learn the new words .

Work on 1a.The words in the box describe how food   can taste. Write them under the correct pictures. Some pictures have more   than one word.

Fill in each blank with the correct word given.

Work on 1b.Write the name of a different food after   each word. Have students finish the task as required.

Step 2

Free Talk.

Ask Ss the questions:

1. Do you like eating potato chips?

2. Which kind of taste do you like?

3. Do you know how they were invented?

Discuss and show how to make potato chips.

Do you know the history of potato chips?

Step 3

Practice

Activity 1c.Listen and circle T or F.   Then check the answers.



Step 4

Listen again and answer some questions.

Who were potato chips invented by?

When were potato chips invented?

How were they invented ?

Step 5

Activity 1d.

Listen again and then complete the sentences.

Step 6

Pair works 1e.

Let Ss make conversations about the invention of   potato chips.

E.g.:

A: Did you know potato chips were   invented by mistake?

B: Wow, I didn’t know that. Who invented   them?

A: It was invented by a cook called   George Crum ….

Step 7

Brainstorm.

Introduce to Ss how some food was invented, like   corn flakes and fireworks.

Step 8

Exercises.

Examples and exercises about the passive voice.

Homework

1.       Recite the new words in Page 45.

2.       Preview 2a-2e.

3.       Finish the workbook of Section B 1a-1e.
