Listening Activities

1. Pre-listening stage

1) Predicting

a. The students are given the pictures, the title, and the key words from the text and make predictions about the content of the listening text.

b. Let students read the listening comprehension questions before they listen and ask them to make a guess the answers to the questions.       

2) Setting the scene

  The teacher gives some background knowledge about the listening text. So the students will be better prepared to understand what they hear.

3) Understanding new or key words 

They are likely to occur in the listening text. The new words and expressions are demonstrated and explained by the teacher.

4) Having a discussion

  The students are asked to express their own opinions about the idea to be developed by the listening text. The students study some visual or reading materials related to the listening text and then based on them to have a discussion.

2. While-listening stage

1) Listening for gist

— Deciding upon a title            — Tick out of a list the main points of the text.

— Sequencing the main points      — Writing a brief summary

2) Listening for specific information

— Listen and match/circle/tick

— Listen and fill in the table

— Listen and fill in the blanks

3) Listening for detailed information

— Listen and choose the best answer

— True or false (The students have to judge whether some statements about listening

         text are true or false.)

— Listen and answer questions

4) Note-taking

— Listen to the text and note down some information required.

— Listen to the text and complete the outline of the listening text with the main points of the text.

— Listen to the text and note down its main points in the form of an outline.

5) Listen and sequence

     The students sequence the sentences or paragraphs based on the listening text.

6) Listen and draw or act or label

     The students do some drawings or acts according to the listening text.

7) Listen and predict

    After the students have listened to part of the listening text, the teacher stops the recorder and asks them to predict how the text will continue.
