Teaching Context

Analysis of teaching material:

(1)   Students can learn some personal pronoun and possecive pronoun in this passage.

(2)   From reading, it introduces some information about “family” and “family emotion”, and the condition of foster home.

Analysis of students:

(1)   The teaching subjects are the first year of vocational school students, intellectual development tends to mature. Their cognitive ability is higher than the junior school stage.

(2)   The students study hard, but some students are active; they want to show their strengths. As a result, this lesson is interesting for them to learn, they will be take part in this class positively.

Teaching Aims

Aims of knowledge:

(1) Know and master the key words and phrases ( member 成员 interesting 有趣的 official 公务的,公职的,公事的 pink 粉色的;粉红色 couple 夫妇 cousin 堂姐妹兄弟,表姐妹兄弟 attend 参加,加入,出席 real 真的 toy 玩具 think of 认为 one…the other 一个另一个

(2) Train the students’ reading ability.

Aims of ability:

(1) Be able to read the passage and pick up the main information of the passage;

(2) Express their opinions by answering the questions.

Aims of emotion:

Learn to introduce family members, and arouse the relationship between students and their family members.

Key points:

1. Mastering of the key words.

2. Help the students to find out the main idea of the passage. 

3. Discuss the question in groups.

Difficult points:

1.Train the students reading skills--skimming, scanning, careful reading.

Teaching Procedure

Step 1: warming up( 7 minutes)

1.      Greeting

T: Good morning, class.

S: Good morning, teacher.

T: Let’s welcome the teachers to our class!

S: (clap hands).

T: How are you today?

S: We are fine, thank you.

T: How is the weather today?

S: Sunny.

T: (ask students) How many members are there in your family? Who are they?

T: What does your father do?

T: Do you live with your parents?

2.      Show pictures 

Show students a picture about my family members.

3.  Students introduce their family.

Let students show pictures and introduce their family members.

Step 2: pre-reading (6 minutes)

Four students in one group to discuss, give two questions.(3min)

1.      What would you do to your children if you become parents?

2.      In your view, how can you become successful parents? Or we say how to be a qualified parent?

Chose students to answer the questions. (3min)

Step 3: while reading (20 minutes) 

1. skimming (5min)

Let students read the passage quickly then discuss the main idea with desk mates and chose the main idea of the passage.

Main idea: Sam White adopted four children, they lived together happily.

2.careful reading(15min)

2.1 Task one: listen to the tape (5min)

Ask students to listen to the tape then close the book and fill in the blanks.

n  Sam White has four children.

n  Sam White has three sons and a daughter.

n  Linlin is a Chinese girl.

n  Ben and Jay play with toy cars.

n  Ben is from England.

2.2 Task two: read the passage carefully(10min)

Teacher give some questions to students before they start careful reading. Give 3 minutes to students. Let students discuss the questions with classmates.

1. Sam White has no wife, so how can he have four children?

He adopted them.

2. What do the children think of their father, Sam White?

Sam White is a good father and they are good friends.

Groups discuss the blank below and fill the proper words in. (textbook page16) 

(1) After work, Mr. Smith usually plays with his little son.

(2) She never had any real friends at school.

(3) Jenny’s bedroom is full of toys and looks like a fairy world.

(4) She has already had two sons, so she wants to have a daughter.

(5) We need to protect the animals.

Step 4: post reading (6 minutes)

Give students some adjectives, let them choose those which they think best to describe their father. Then write down and share their opinions to others.
