Topic 1 When is your birthday?
Section A
Ⅰ. Aims and demands
1. (1) Learn the names of months.
(2) Learn to read the years in English.
2. Learn the past simple tense with “was/were born”.
(1)When was he born, do you know? He was born in June, 1985.
(2)Where was he born? In Maryland, the U.S.A.
(3)When were you born? I was born in January, 1997.
3. Lead students to pay attention to the moving deeds of the famous people and learn from them. Call on them to make contributions to the society in the future.

Step 1 Review
1. The whole class sings Happy Birthday together. Lead to the months.
2. Show a calendar to review the month the students have learnt, and then teach the rest of the expression of months “May” “June” “July” “August”.
2. Write down the expression of months on the blackboard and let students read them. Pay attention to the pronunciation of “January” “February” “June” “July” “September” “October” “November” “December”.

3. Let the students sum up how many days there are in each month. Then listen to the tape and follow it. Pay attention to the sentence stress.
4. Listen to 3b-A and circle the months they hear.
Step 2 Presentation
1. Learn the expression of years. Ask students to observe how to say the years in English on the book. Then let them practice the years and write them down on the book. Finish 3a.
2. Let students observe and sum up how to say the years and months together. Then practice the dates by themselves.
3. Listen to 3b-B and write down the years they hear.
4. Show a picture of Liu Xiang, then ask and answer to lead to “be born”. The teacher lets the students observe and sum up the usage of “be born”.
Step 3 Consolidation
1. Let students practice the dialog in pairs according to the example. Finish 1c.
2. Ask and answer between the teacher and students to lead to “was born”. Then show some famous people’s pictures to the students. Let them work in pairs, using “was born”.
3. Show a picture of Michael Phelps. Then listen to 1a and answer the following questions.
(1) When was he born?
(2) Where was he born?
Step 4 Practice
1. Read 1a by themselves.
2. Read 1a in roles.
3. Choose some students to read 1a.
Step 5 Project
Make a survey.
Survey their classmates and find out when/where they were born. Then choose some students to report it out in class.
