Phil White has just returned from an 18,000-mile, around-t he-world bicycle trip. White had two reasons for making this epic journey. First of all, he wanted to use the trip to raise money for charity, which he did. He raised70,000 for the British charity, Oxfam. White's second reason for making the trip was to break the world record and become the fastest person to cycle around the world. He is still waiting to find out if he has broken the record or not.

White set off fromTrafalgar Square, inLondon, on 19th June 2004 and was back 299 days later. He spent more than l,300 hours in the saddle(车座) and destroyed four sets of tyres and three bike chains. He had the adventure of his life crossing Europe, the Middle East,India, Asia,Australia,New Zealandand theAmericas. Amazingly, he did all of this with absolutely no support team. No jeep carrying food, water and medicine. No doctor. Nothing! Just a bike and a very, very long road.

The journey was lonely and desperate at times. He also had to fight his way across deserts, through jungles and over mountains. He cycled through heavy rains and temperatures of up to 45 degrees, all to help people in need. There were other dangers along the road. InIran, he was chased by armed robbers and was lucky to escape with his life and the little money he had. The worst thing that happened to him was having to cycle into a headwind on a road that crosses the south ofAustralia. For l,000 kilometres he battled against the wind that was constantly pushing him. This part of the trip was slow, hard work and depressing, but he made it in the end. Now Mr.White is back and intends to write a book about his adventures.2012·上海·A

He realized that only after the cause was found could cholera be controlled. Thus he carried out his research, marking the deaths on the map, analyzed the results and finally drew a conclusion with certainty that the water was to blame. As a result, King cholera was defeated. Example 1

If you ask who is the greatest scientist in the 20th century, most people will come up with the answer --- Stephen Hawking --- an outstanding English theoretical physicist, who could merely live on the wheelchair.

Born in 1942, however, Stephen Hawking gained a degree from bothCambridgeUniversityas well asOxfordUniversity. But his life is not always that lucky, Stephen was exposed to a severe disease at the age of 21, leaving him lying on the chair for the rest of his life. It was his determination that helped him overcame the difficulties and carry on the research on Black Hole. With his strong will and hard work, Stephen Hawking published his famous book A Brief History of Time in 1988. Up to now, he is still positive about writing scientific theories and delivering speeches around the world.

To my understanding, it is his great determination; strong will as well as insistence that makes him outstanding throughout the world. Life doesn’t come as what you think, but the great determination to facing the challenges in our life is the most important.

                                              ---  By  Zhang Siqi

Example 2

Born in 1942, Stephen Hawking, one of the most outstanding theoretical physicist inEngland, taught us the meaning of determination.

In my view, Stephen Hawking is a genius in physics, which leads him to an easy approach to graduating from bothCambridgeUniversityandOxfordUniversity. However, unfortunately, a deadly disease caught him in his 20s. Instead of being defeated, Stephen still held the belief that he should carry on his research on Black Hole. With his strong determination, he finally published his famous book A brief History of Time in 1988. Presently, Hawking is devoted to scientific theories, which will be published all over the world.

Deeply touched by Stephen Hawking’s experience, we should learn that only by working hard and possessing a strong determination can we achieve what we dreamed about.

                                                           --- By  Yu Renjing

Example 3

Stephen Hawking, born in 1942, graduated from theUniversityofOxfordas well as theUniversityofCambridge. He is an outstanding theoretical physicist in the world.

Unfortunately, at the age of 21, he developed a severe illness, which made him disabled forever. He, however, was not defeated by the deadly disease. It was his great determination and strong will that made him carry on his research on the Black Hole. Because of years of hard work, his book A Brief History Of Time was published in 1988. At present, he is still buried in writing papers about the universe and delivering speeches all over the world.

He inspires us that we need to be determined to our goals. Only by doing this can we achieve our dream through difficulties and challenges.
