一、反思教学内容

The teaching content of this period is “Module 6 Unit 2 The WWF is working hard to save them all”. This is a reading passage. The theme of the text is related to the title of this module----Animals in danger. And the reading passage is mainly about pandas. Such topic is related to daily life, so it is helpful to raise learning interest of students and it will be also helpful to improve Ss’ reading ability. The topic is very interesting and practical. Therefore, it’s not difficult to draw students’ attention to the reading activities. However, there’re many new words that students may not understand, and there’re also some sentences with infinitives that students are not familiar with, all of which may affect their understanding and interest of learning the reading material. Therefore, in this period, I helped students improve their reading abilities such as gaining the main idea of a passage or guessing the meaning of a new word, I also tried to guide students to build up a good attitude to life through intensive and extensive reading.

二、反思教学过程

In order to make the students understand the reading passage better and improve their reading skills, I applied PWP teaching method. Before reading, I guided students to look at the picture in the text and asked them to predict the main idea of the passage. After students finishing skimming and scanning activities, I first let students do an easy task by asking them to fill in a chart to summarize the passage. Then, I took advantage of mind map to explain the structure of the passage. It not only helped students better understand the text, but also did benefit to their writing and thinking. In the end, the group work activity which asked students to think of the ways of protecting pandas offered students an opportunity to output what they have learnt, especially the usages of the infinitives.

三、反思教学效果

Though there’re many weak points in this teaching design, it’s still a great success in the following aspects:

1. Good preparation. Before having the class, I read the textbook carefully and search for information about pandas and the WWF. Also, on the process of designing the lesson, I always put my students in the first place and combines teaching with the students’ learning levels and abilities. The individual work such as skimming and scanning activities stimulated students to think independently while the group work like discussing the ways to help pandas enabled students to cooperate with each other and develop teamwork.

2. Reasonable design. In this period, students had a good mastery of the reading passage through doing different tasks. It is very useful for students to use the topic to communicate with others in their daily life. It’s also helpful for students to improve their reading ability. All the students could learn some new words and develop their reading ability more or less. Meanwhile, they learned more about pandas. They are willing to protect the animals in danger and the environment around them after learning the lesson.

3. Student-oriented tasks. The targets of the class are to all the students. As most of my students are from the rural areas and their English is not good enough. They have a poor foundation of English and don’t know much about the WWF. In order to make them take part in the class activities passionately, I played a short video by Jackie Chan first to draw their attention. And then I activated the students’ brain by talking about pandas, which students were familiar with. As a result, I raised students’ interest and prepared them for the following reading activities. And exercises designed are based on the comprehending including the main idea and details, guessing the meanings of new words and the writer’s attitude. In this lesson, the students of different levels were taken into consideration.

Though there’re many good points in this design and class, but there still remains something to be improved.

1. Mind map is a good way to show the construction of an article and develop students’ thinking. However, I found many students didn’t know how to draw it in class because they hadn’t done that ever before. It frustrated their interest and might make them lose heart.

2. It’s a pity that I didn’t have enough time to let students find out their own difficulties and encourage them to solve together.

四、教学改进措施

1. Improve the teaching design to better improve students’ ability. For example, some students don’t know how to draw the mind map in class. I should guide them to summarize the text in their everyday study. Also, it’s quite necessary to help them form good habits of learning English and teach them good ways to learn English.

2. In this period, I didn’t give students time to raise questions that they didn’t understand. If I can arrange the time better, for example, play the short video before the lesson, I would have more time for students to raise their questions. And I can advise them to work in groups to discuss the difficult points presented in the lesson.

3. In the last activity, I should ask students to find out the sentences with infinitives first, and then guide them to analyze the usages of the infinitives, and they’re sure to understand better about infinitives.
