Language Skills By the end of the class, students will be able to: (1) Describe Jobs’ personality with adjectives such as unbeatable, creative and faithful and give their reasons based on the reading material. (2) Write a short passage about Jobs from three perspectives: introduction, personality and summary. Language Knowledge (1) Gain some information on Jobs’ life. (2) Grasp the expressions of opinions, such as to my understanding, and in my opinion. (3) Specify a person’s personality with supportive reasons.

Language Focuses In this class, the teacher will focus on leading students to learn how to express their opinions on a person’s personality and write a passage about a great/famous person. Anticipated Difficulties This passage may be a little long and difficult for students to read all by themselves. Thus, the class will be divided into four groups and each group is supposed to read one part of the passage in a careful and detailed way .

This period is the reading and writing part taken from Unit 5, Module 1 of New High English for China. The topic of this unit is famous people/great and the writing task of this unit is to describe a famous/great people. In this period, T applies some authentic reading material to arouse students’ interest in writing and help students learn how to describe a famous/great people. The reading material is taken from Steve Jobs’ speech at the graduation ceremony of Stanford University in 2005. It consists of six paragraphs. The reading material mainly displays a short period of Jobs’ life, during which he got fired and decided to start over. The person who we are going to discuss is not only famous, but also great. What’s more, he is much closer to students’ life than the main character in this unit, Nelson Mandela. Therefore, students will be more interested in writing and will participate more in this class. However, students may have some difficulty understanding new words and phrases in the authentic reading material. |

Step 1 Lead-in Activity 1 Create a situation T creates a situation of going to buy a new mobile phone and asks Ss for advice. T shows some pictures of iphone 6 and introduces Apple’s former CEO Steve Jobs. Activity 2 Description of Jobs’ personality T shows a picture of Steve Jobs and asks Ss what they know about him and then introduces Job’s life to Ss. Then T asks Ss to work in groups to describe Job’s personality according to his life introduction or guess his personality according to the pictures with the adjectives that they have learned in this unit.

These activities intend to make a situation to arouse students’ interests in class, introduce Steve Jobs, and review some adjectives that can be used to describe one’s personality.

Step 2 Reading Activity 3 skimming T asks Ss to skim the passage quickly and read the topic sentence of each paragraph to tell the main idea of the passage by using the sentence pattern “The story is about Jobs’_____.” T asks Ss to think about what happened to Steve Jobs. Then T asks Ss to skim the passage again and divide the passage into four parts according to topic sentences and key sentences. Ss are supposed to match the main idea of each part with the paragraphs. Activity 4 detailed reading According to the main idea of each part, T guide Ss to think about three special qualities of Jobs: creative, unbeatable and faithful. These three qualities are presented in paragraphs 1, 2-5, and 6 respectively. T asks Ss to read each parts in groups of four to find out supportive reasons. Ss are supposed to use some sentence patterns to express their opinions in group discussion. T sets an example. E.g. In paragraph 1, we can see that Jobs sets up Apple early in his life and makes it a billion company very soon. From this fact we can judge that Jobs is very creative. As you know, he once dropped out of college, if he isn’t creative enough, he can’t make such smart products such as iphone. Step 3 Speaking Activity 5 sharing (5 min) T asks a student from each group to present his supportive reasons and analyze Jobs’ personality. Activity 6 discussion(2 min) T asks Ss to discuss what can we learn from Jobs’ life experience, especially his attitude towards life. Ss are supposed to think about how can they learn from Jobs to deal with the problems in their own life, such as study.
Step 4 Writing T asks Ss to write a passage about Jobs within 150 words. Firstly, T asks Ss to review what we have learned in this class and then discuss in groups about what to write about Jobs. They can make a list. Secondly, T summarizes an outline for students to write about Jobs and then ss are supposed to write 2-4 sentences in each paragraph. Thirdly, T asks Ss to exchange their writings and revise them. Lastly, T asks Ss to rewrite the passages and hand them in after class. |
These activities aim to help students learn how to read a passage in a general and detailed way and have a more careful study on Jobs about his personality, which makes a foundation for speaking and writing.
These activities aim to make full use of the notes that Ss have just made to encourage them to communicate in English. Since they have something to say, they are willing to share with others. As a result, it can improve Ss’ communication ability.
These activities aim to encourage Ss to apply what they have learned in this lesson into writing. Writing is the output of this class. |
